Murthwaite Upholstery was founded in honour of my grandfather, Tom Murthwaite—a second-generation upholsterer. As a child, I vividly recall watching him work, hammering away at customers’ chairs amidst the distinctive scent of hessian and linseed oil. His ability to hold tacks in his mouth without ever swallowing one was a marvel, matched only by the ever-present tin of custard creams he kept nearby.
It is with pride and reverence that I continue tradition under the name Murthwaite Upholstery.

Indeed, not all chairs need the full upholstery or recover. Sometimes a sympathetic repair to a soggy chair base or not-so-fluffy cushion is all that is needed to rejuvenate your furniture.

I believe in keeping my clients informed every step of the way. I start with a consultation to understand your needs and preferences. From there, I provide you with a detailed quote and timeline.
You choose the fabric & finish - whether it be linen, velvet or leather. I then work on your furniture, keeping you updated at every stage of the process.
